The Protection Island Cultural Historical Society is a non-profit society dedicated to preserving the history and highlighting the culture of Protection Island, British Columbia. Our official mailing address is 208B Colvilleton Trail, Nanaimo, B.C. V9R 6R1

Protection Island is a small island located in the harbour of the city of Nanaimo on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The island is a community of helpful and generous people whose diverse activities and interests provide opportunities for unique and rewarding cultural events.

TPICHS broad mission is two-fold:  First is the collection and conservation of artifacts relating to the history of the island, including items from the coal mining era which began in the mid-1880's and ended in the 1930's. The archival collection includes print documents, maps, photographs, newspaper accounts, personal collections, books and oral histories of islanders' recollections and stories. Exhibits of artifacts and archival materials are mounted to educate the community about historical aspects of Protection Island.   Secondly, TPICH is dedicated to reflecting the talents and eclectic interests of the residents, and educating ourselves and the wider community about the history of P.I. As islanders are a diverse lot we have sponsored art history lectures; collections of antique musical instruments, dolls, radios, and doll sewing machines; photography exhibits; and have written and performed an historical musical review. We sponsor a croquet tournament during Nanaimo's annual Bathtub Day weekend.

We thank the Coastal Community Credit Union for their generous donation in providing the impetus to complete our archives building.     Contact the Staff
